Halloween, More Complications and Early November

During the day on October 31st, our daughter had a busy day. She had two drain tubes removed. Some medications were reduced or stopped, she had a new PICC line inserted and the old one removed. A PICC line is a thin, soft, long catheter that is inserted into a vein in the arm, leg, or neck. The tip of the catheter is positioned in a large vein that carries blood into the heart. The PICC line is used for long-term intravenous (IV) antibiotics, nutrition or medications, and blood draws. Overall it was a good day with progress being made.…

After Surgery and the First Several Days Post OP

The first time we saw our daughter was around 3 am the day after she was born. She had made it through surgery and was in the Pediatric ICU. On the way over to see her, we didn’t know what to expect. Having been awake for almost 24 hours, walking into her room was overwhelming on a whole different level. Our daughter was 7 lbs 7 oz and 21 inches at birth and was dwarfed by the bed she was laying in combined with the amount of equipment surrounding her sustaining her life. She was still intubated and on the…

OHSU Diagnosis, Consultations, and Surgery

Arrival at OHSU and the NICU Arriving at OHSU we parked at the ambulance parking near the emergency room entrance and took an elevator to the NICU. As the PANDA team, our daughter, and myself entered the NICU we were met by a NICU doctor. The NICU at OHSU was set up into pods which were areas where 2-3 babies were located and being taken care of by the staff. The pod of the NICU our daughter was taken to was in the back corner. As we passed the other pods most were full of premature babies and neonatal infants…

Delivery, Complications and the Trip to the Children’s Hospital

Start of the Complications It was discovered soon after the procedure for the Caesarian began that the epidural my wife was given wasn’t taking full effect on one side of her body. Because it wasn’t taking effect I remember my wife looking at me and saying she could still feel pain. At that moment I could see the pain on her face and it was relayed to the team that she could feel what they were doing. They were able to give her serval local injections of pain/numbing meds. It wasn’t until the c section was complete with the umbilical…

Leading Up to Delivery and the Morning of Delivery

The Pregnancy The months, days, hours, and minutes leading up to delivery were overwhelming, exciting, and full of nervousness. Overall, the pregnancy was “normal” with no complications or indicators that the pregnancy was high risk. For about seven months of the pregnancy, my wife was blessed with morning sickness nearly every day. The first time it happened were we on the phone talking. I couldn’t understand what she was doing. One minute we're talking and the next it sounded like she was gargling water. It then dawned on me what was going on. From that point forward anytime we were…

Our Family and a Brief Overview of Our Daughters Medical History

Our Family My wife and I have two kids. Our son who is 19, is overall healthy outside of allergies and some asthma that flares up when playing sports. He graduated high school and spent a year in college working toward an associates degree in Welding/Metal Fabrication. During this last summer he started interning at a local metal fab shop and loved it. At the start of the school year it was decided he would transition to working full time and not return to school as the focus would be online schooling with COVID still being present. He loves what…
